Truth of Youth – Suzy Kassem Poetry

TRUTH OF YOUTH

I had not heard
In fifteen years
That laughter
From my childhood
Erupting from behind
A closed door
In the pit of my soul.
So old,
Rusty,
And cold.
But the memory
Of those trickling tones
Turned something inside me
Instantly to gold.
How could I have forgotten that sound
Of happiness?
Those ripples of truth
That echoed
The excitement of youth
I had forgotten
Somehow
Somewhere
In the years of me
Breathing.
How could I have forgotten
The most beautiful feeling,
That of simply living
Carefree and
Being?
